TITLE: Certified Scrub Technician
Prepares instruments and supplies to perform procedures according to the physician's documented preferred routine. Prepares the operating field for procedures. Performs routine and delegated duties.

- Operating room technician training required (surgical technician course or Facility staff development program for operating room technicians)

Require frequent and constant judgment and response; occasionally in response to disasters or emergencies, actual events or drills. Require language skills adequate for high-level verbal and written communication in American English.
Require high-level visual and auditory acuity for timely response and patient care assessment activities. Occasional overhead and low reaching. Ability to move quickly in response to physician and patient needs, to stand for long periods and to exert force of up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 20 lbs. frequently and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly. All patient care activities may require the ability to exert force of up to 30 lbs. constantly, up to 40 lbs. occasionally and up to 100 lbs. rarely.
Category I exposure to blood borne pathogens; frequent exposure to chemical hazards; may encounter radiation hazards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND OBJECTIVES

4.6. Assists senior surgical technician as needed with orientation and training of new personnel; acts as a resource person regarding all surgical technician responsibilities.

5. Adheres to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities.
5.1. Reports observed or suspected violations, hazards, and noncompliance according to Facility policy to the Safety Officer or other designated person. Corrects immediately and responsibly, safety issues or problems qualified to address (obtains correct laser glasses, wet floor, equipment cords tangled or not lying flat on floor).
5.2. Observes safety measures in performance of job duties and responsibilities. Uses proper body mechanics at all times (storing supplies/equipment).
5.3. Respond to emergency situations with competence and composure. Know locations of eye wash stations and spill kits.
6. Interacts appropriately with various age groups.
6.1. Accurately assesses and interprets age-specific patient data.
6.2. Accurately interprets age-specific patient responses to questions and instructions.
6.3. Consider age-specific patient requirements when responding to emergency situations.
7. Performs specified functions to meet the requirements of each procedure approved for the Facility.
7.1. Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to physicians' preference cards and reports to the proper person when supplies are low.
7.2. Inspects equipment for proper working condition including the focus and zoom on the microscope.
7.3. Assists in the preparation of the operating room by making sure settings on the microscope and phaco-emulsification equipment are correct for the surgeon.
8. Performs operating room technician functions following prescribed operating/procedure room procedures and principles of aseptic technique.
8.1. Adheres to aseptic technique when opening sterile packages and preparing for procedures.
8.2. Arranges instruments according to routine for the scheduled procedure; confirms that instruments work properly.
8.3. Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays.
8.4. Work area is kept clean and orderly.
8.5. Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and responds according to Facility policy.
9. Correctly utilizes and cares for supplies and equipment as directed.
9.1. Handles equipment and instruments correctly to provide availability and safety.
9.2. Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedures. When supplies or instruments are needed during a procedure, is able to direct the circulating nurse to minimize any delay in obtaining the necessary item.
9.3. Assists in work areas by cleaning, storing, packaging, and sterilizing instruments according to written instructions from the manufacturer.
9.4. Assists with storing and stocking supplies as directed.
9.5. Maintains and updates instrument cards and surgeons' preference cards.
10. Adheres to sterilization process policies and procedures.
10.1. Clean each item according to the manufacturer instructions.
10.2. Lubricate the instruments with instrument milk making sure the lubricant is not outdated.
10.3. Inspects the instruments under a microscope for damage or defects.
10.4. Sorts and arranges items into correct trays and individual wrapped items according to

11. Correctly operates prevac, gravity and Quantim 16 autoclaves, ultrasonic washers, and other
equipment for processing items.
11.1. Performs required biological monitoring tests on all sterilizers. Performs Bowie-dick test on all prevac sterilizers according to Facility policy.
11.2. Positions items correctly in sterilizer and selects proper cycle: seeks assistance when needed.
11.3. Checks biological indicators, Bowie-dick test, and the sterilizer monitoring strip for
proper functioning of the sterilizer.
11.4 Maintains availability of supplies for recording continuity during the sterilization process.
11.5. If sterilizer fails any testing, notifies OR team and arranges for repair.
11.6. Cleans sterilizers according to Facility procedures.
12. Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician.
12.1. Documents any records or forms according to Facility policy.
12.2. Communicates information about the patient's status to appropriate patient care staff.
12.3. Accurately comprehends and interprets verbal orders and directions.
12.4. Displays skill in oral and written communication.
