TITLE: Instrument Processing Technician
Cleans, packages, sterilizes, and stores the supplies, instruments, and equipment.
- Reports to: Director of Nursing/Senior Surgical Technician
- Supervises: None
- Demonstrated understanding of sterilization principles required
- Experience in central processing functions preferred
Require constant and frequent judgment and response. Require language skills for communication in American English.
Require high-level visual and auditory acuity for timely response and patient care activities. Ability to move quickly in response to physician and patient needs, occasional overhead and low reaching, bending, and the ability to exert force of up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 20 lbs. frequently and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
Category I exposure to bloodborne pathogens; frequent exposure to chemical hazards; may encounter radiation hazards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND OBJECTIVES
1. Supports the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the Organization.

2. Contributes to the progress and development of the approved QAPI Program.
2.1. Supports risk management and participates in programs directed to patient and staff safety.
2.2. Contributes to the QAPI process; identifies role and contributions to functional teams.
2.3. Objectively evaluates suggestions, grievances, and processes to identify opportunities to improve performance and quality of care.
2.4. Performs according to approved continuous quality improvement policies and procedures.
3. Communicates effectively with patients, visitors, physicians, and co‑workers.
3.1. Interactions are respectful and courteous.
3.2. Communicates effectively and professionally using a translator when necessary.
3.3. Documents that information received from the patient is disseminated to the appropriate people or departments.
4. Maintains and promotes professional competence through continuing education and other learning experiences.
4.1. Participates in committees, conferences, and QAPI activities.
4.2. Seeks new learning experiences by accepting challenging opportunities and responsibilities.

5. Adheres to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities.
5.1. Reports observed or suspected violations, hazards, and noncompliance according to Facility policy to the Safety Officer or other designated person.
5.2. Observes safety measures in performance of job duties and responsibilities.
5.3. Responds to emergency situations with competence and composure.
5.4. Maintains a clean and orderly central processing work area (e.g. shelves, counters, equipment).
6. Interacts appropriately with various age groups.
6.1. Provides equipment and supplies appropriate to the patient's age group.
6.2. Considers age-specific patient requirements when responding to emergency situations.
7. Adheres to sterilization process policies and procedures.
7.1. Cleans each item according to manufacturers' instructions.
7.2. Verifies that each item is in good working condition; lubricates items when needed and inspects instruments under a microscope for damage and defects.
7.3. Sorts and arranges items into correct trays and wraps trays and individual items according to Facility policy.
7.4. Accurately labels each item according to Facility policy.
8. Correctly operates sterilizers, ultrasonic washers, and other equipment for processing items.
8.1. Positions items correctly in sterilizer and selects proper cycle; seeks assistance when needed.
8.2. Checks indicators for proper functioning.
8.3. Performs required biological monitoring tests on all sterilizers according to Facility policy and procedures.
8.4. Maintains availability of supplies for recording continuity during the sterilization process.
8.5. Cleans sterilizers according to Facility policy and procedures.
9. Maintains inventory levels and accurate records.
9.1. Performs weekly inspections of all sterile items in the Facility and checks for outdated
items and package integrity of wrapped sterilized items; replaces items as necessary.
9.2. Places items in correct location.
9.3. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for the sterile processing area.
9.4. Maintains and updates the instrument tray inventory list.
9.5. Maintains current information regarding routine preference cards.
9.6. Accurately documents count of items sent to and returned by the laundry service.
